ORIGINAL STORY
Romeo and Juliet is a tragic play written by William Shakespeare around 1595. Set in the Italian city of Verona, it follows the ill-fated romance between two young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, whose families are locked in a long-standing bitter feud. In the start, Romeo, a young Montague, is melancholy over his unrequited love for a woman named Rosaline. To lift his spirits, his cousin Benvolio and their friend Mercutio persuade him to crash the Capulet’s grand ball, hoping Romeo might find someone new.
At the Capulet party, Romeo and Juliet meet for the first time and are instantly drawn to each other. They fall in love, unaware that they belong to enemy families. When they discover the truth, they are devastated—but their love is too strong to resist. With the help of Friar Lawrence (tutor Fred in this edition), a kind-hearted priest who hopes their union might end the feud, they marry in secret the next day.
Trouble brews quickly after the secret wedding. Tybalt, Juliet’s hot-tempered cousin, is furious that Romeo dared to show up at the Capulet party. He challenges Romeo to a duel. Romeo, now Tybalt’s relative by marriage, refuses to fight. Mercutio, offended by Romeo’s cowardice, takes up the challenge instead and is fatally wounded. Enraged by his friend’s death, Romeo kills Tybalt in revenge.
As punishment for the murder, the Prince banishes Romeo from Verona. This is a devastating blow to the newlyweds. Before leaving, Romeo sneaks into Juliet’s room to spend one final night with her. Meanwhile, Lord Capulet, unaware of Juliet’s secret marriage, arranges for her to marry Paris, a nobleman. Juliet refuses, which angers her parents. Desperate to avoid the second marriage, Juliet seeks help from Friar Laurence.
The Friar gives her a potion that will make her appear dead for 42 hours. His plan is for Juliet to fake her death, be buried in the family tomb, and then escape with Romeo after she awakens. Unfortunately, the message explaining this plan never reaches Romeo. Instead, he hears that Juliet is dead. Devastated, Romeo buys poison, planning to dig up Juliet and die with her.
At the Capulet tomb, Romeo encounters Paris mourning Juliet and kills him in a duel. Believing Juliet to be truly dead, Romeo drinks the poison and dies beside her. Moments later, Juliet awakens, sees Romeo dead, and takes his dagger to end her own life.
The tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliet finally bring the Montagues and Capulets to their senses. Grief-stricken, they agree to end their feud and honor the memory of their children..

The
ADAPTATION
This year, the eighth-grade students created their own adaptation of Romeo and Juliet from scratch! They began by brainstorming themes for the play, ultimately voting on a high school setting. While they had an initial idea for the plot, it underwent many significant revisions as they wrote each scene. Throughout the process, they frequently referred back to Shakespeare’s original to guide their storyline. In fact, edits continued right up to the week before the performance! With the help of tools like ChatGPT, they crafted a version they’re truly proud of and that you’ll see on the stage.
